After buying our home in September of 2014, we basically moved our kids furniture in, hung some decals on the wall and called it a day. I bought a plush rug from Target for R’s room, as his was hardwood and I wanted it to feel a little cozier. Ā Me, being me, I have very few pictures of the “before.” And the ones I do have unmade beds and messy rooms! As we get to know each other in this blog, you will see this is just how I roll. Get used to it š D’s room had some map border that I convinced myself was appropriate for a kids room. Once I began the insane task of trying to remove it, I would curse the day it was invented. Never again!
I have a copious amount of pins onĀ PinterestĀ for Kids Decor and Design. I knew the “look” I wanted to go for, sort of a fun, young, industrial/crafty design. With, of course, a gallery wall (as we get to know each other you will see I am a fanatic about my gallery walls). R is very easy and malleable when it comes to design suggestions. I suggested a beach, nautical-ish theme based on a super cool handmade lighthouse drawing on a piece of driftwood I found at a local thrift store for $8. Luckily I was there on a day when all home decor was 1/2 price so I got this gem for $4!
In his room, I already had a corrugated metal R as well as a heart craft that I found online for Valentine’s Day and my wonderful husband actually went and did with the kids. As you get to know him as well, you will see how funny this is. Although he has a myriad of talents, crafting is not one of them. And it appears this craft was “expert level” dexterity required, which doesn’t always work well with 24 first graders. He made it through though! This is a wrapped wire heart with colorful yarn wrapped around it. You can find the tutorial onĀ Family Chic Blog.
His room was painted a steely blue gray when we moved in, which was actually a very nice color. However, it seemed to darken the room which got little natural light to begin with. I did some research on Pinterest and Google images, and settled on Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. This would hopefully lighten up the room a bit. He also loves art and had done the bunny drawing so I found that frame at a thrift store and it worked perfectly above his bed.
D is a little more edgy and mature than R, despite being twins. He actually wanted a zombie room, but Mama did not, so I did an “Adventure” theme. Ā He does love being out in nature, so it definitely fits him. I think he’s forgotten all about zombies;) I was really able to find some amazing vintage printables for National Parks which came in very handy. For his room I picked Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I also used a thrifted art piece with a mountain scene, as well as a light up canvas firefly in a jar print-one of his favorite things to do is catch fireflies and other critters.
For the design elements, I picked up some things from the TargetĀ dollar spot-like flag, pom pom and felt bunting. I purchased very inexpensive certificate frames at Walmart. They are not my favorite ever, but will work until I want to invest a little more money into better frames, or more time in spray painting thrift store frames.
Hope you enjoy this re-do. It’s not 100% complete. I still need some better bedding and a piece or two for D’s room, but I am really happy with the way they turned out. Be sure to check back for the final reveal!
